Google Adwords, does it work ?

Most people we come across might have heard about Google Adwords, but very few understand how it works or the power it has to drive "targeted" traffic to their websites.

What we mean by "targeted" traffic is the following:

Let's describe Google Adwords in the everyday language that most of us understand. Let's say you have a business that sells running shoes. You have a shop on a busy street with hundreds of people walking up & down the road everyday. Not everybody walking along that road is interested in buying shoes, right ? However, there are some people walking along your road, who actually are looking for a new pair of shoes.

You decide to be proactive & you put somebody in the front of your store to hand out pamphlets. With glossy new pamphlets in hand, your team starts handing them out furiously. Checking in on the team, you notice a trend. For every 100 flyers passed out, only two flyers are not immediately thrown away in the closest bin. So you take stock of your approach and find that you had to use 100 pamphlets to get 2 "potential" customers through your door. More worringly, 98 of those 100 pamphlets were just tossed away!

What if there was a way, to only give a pamphlet to the people who were actually looking to buy shoes ?

What if you could have all the people looking to buy shoes, walk on your side of road, right past your store, & all the other people who do not want to buy shoes, walk on the other side of the road?   • What is Google Adwords ?
    Google Adwords Screenshot Most of us are familiar with Google search, right ? Now if you use Google for more than 10 minutes, you will see a "sponsored link", appearing either on the top of the page, or on the right of the search results.

    You might have also seen a section called "Ads by Google" on a few websites, which are also sponsored links. Those ads are placed there by companies or individuals using a program called Google Adwords.

  • How does Google Adwords work ?
    Google Adwords is fairly straightforward. Whenever someone performs a search query for a specific keyword or phrase, i.e. "web design" - Google then matches it's database of advertisers to that keyword.

    For example, as a web design company, we want to have our ads displayed whenever someone searches a phrase related to "web design" on Google. Google looks for the ads that are the most relevant to the search query, & then displays those ads in the "sponsored links" section.

  • How much does Google charge me to display my ad ?
    YOU decide how much you want to pay per "click". Google charges on a "Cost Per Click" model, which means that only when your ad is clicked, will you be charged. However, you must take note, that if you choose to pay 50c per click & your competitor comes in at 60c per click, his ad will be "ranked" ahead of yours in the search results.

    You might be thinking, well then, the man with the biggest wallet wins, but this is not true. Google rewards relevance, meaning that the more relevant your ad is to the search query, the greater the chance you have of paying a lower CPC while still being ranked higher than your competitors. What's more, is that the higher your "click-through-rate" is, the more that Google rewards you.

    Let me guess, the next question you want answered is "how do I get a higher click-through-rate than my competitor?". Therein lies the million dollar question...

  • Why would I want to use Google Adwords ?
    Getting onto the first page of the Google's results can be tricky. It also takes time for your listing to climb the Google ladder. "Organic" search results also depend on how Google indexes the pages of a website. So you might be ranked well for "web design" but not so well for "website design". Google Adwords allows you to target that keyword, or any other keyword or phrase that you might want to use.

    Google Adwords also comes in handy if you want to direct people to a specific page, rather than have them land on your homepage & then try to find what they looking for. For example, you might be running a special & you want people to go to that page first, Google Adwords can do that for you.

    When someone clicks one of your ads, that person is then directed to your website, thus driving instant, targeted traffic to it. There is no need to wait for your website to climb position in the "Organic" search results to increase traffic to your site.

    An advertiser can choose when his ads are displayed - it's pretty much up to you. The beauty is that you can choose very specific times of the day to run your ads, you can even choose which days to run your ads etc.

    However, once your daily budget has been reached, your ads stop being displayed until the start of the next day.

  • Where exactly do my ads get displayed ?
    Two places: The Google Search Network & the Google Content Network.

    Search Network: Your text ads will be displayed on the Google Search network, meaning that they will be displayed in Google's search results. They will also be displayed in the search results pages of other properties within the Search Network. These other properties form part of a results page as a user navigates through a site's directory, or on other relevant search pages.

    Content Network: Your ads will also be displayed on a collection of websites & other products, that are based on content themes rather than specific keywords. So your ads will also be displayed on other sites that have content that is relevant to your ads. i.e. If you run ads about dog food, your ads will only be displayed on websites that have info pertaining to dogs or pets.

  • What are keywords ?
    Keywords are targeted words & phrases which are relevant to your ads. When a user searches these particular words/phrases, your ads will be displayed. This way you will drive visitors to your website who are already interested in your products, services & info. You are also able to select or choose your own keywords. Some keywords might be more popular than others, which means that they will be more expensive when it comes to bidding on them.

  • How to build a keyword list ?
    First you must think like your customers, existing as well as potential. How would they describe your products ?

    What would an existing customer type into the search bar to find you if they had forgotten your web url ?

    The key to building a list & expanding it, is to include synonyms as well as common misspellings. Don't ignore phrases like "where do I find.......", "what is....." etc. Filter out keywords that are irrelevant & too broad, and lastly, if you are lost for "words", then that is where we step in...

    The relevance of your ad refers to how useful it's information is to the user. The more relevant your ad is, compared to the keyword searched & your web page, the more useful it will be to the user.     Google also rewards ads that are relevant, meaning that you could be bidding 20c less than your competitors are & still have your ad appear in the top few positions.

  • Why do I need to "bid" per keyword ?
    Every time your ads get clicked, Google charges you for that click. Hence the term, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. So, it is possible to bid a different amount for each keyword. eg "keyword 1" might cost R1.00 per click, whereas "keyword 2' might cost R1.50 per click. This all dependens on the competitiveness of the industry you are in, & how many other advertisers are running ads similar to yours.

    If you bid too little, your ad might not appear where you want it to, or not even on the 1st page of results. What is the bottom line ?

  • How much do I need to spend ?
    The budget is up to you! Please keep in mind that not all industries are "equal", some industries are extremely competitive i.e. travel & tourism - so a small budget is not going to go very far within that industry. However plumbing is not as competitive, so a small budget can go a long way.

    Increased budget means increased traffic. However, if your website is not converting that traffic into sales then you are wasting money. So before increasing your adwords budget, it is key to ensure your website is converting existing traffic into sales.

  • Why can you spend less in some industries and not others ?
    When we refer to an industry being competitive within Adwords it means that the cost per click is higher in that specific industry. The reason the cost per click might be higher is that it has more companies advertising within it. So the more people you have the higher the bids are for each click.

    However it is not all doom & gloom. Like we said the travel industry is very competitive however within Google Adwords you can be very specific with regards to you search terms. So if you are in the tourism industry but you have a B&B in Bloemfontein you will pay significantly less for the keyword B&B Bloemfontein than just the keyword B&B, plus you will probably get a much better conversion ratio with the first keyword.

  • How long does it take to see results ?
    Results can mean different things to different people. If results mean visitors to your website, then that can be seen almost immediately.

    However if results means sales from your website then that can take a while. The reason that can take a while is although you are driving a whole bunch more traffic to your website, you might be loosing visitors because the sales funnel on your website might not be optimised correctly or vistors are getting lost along the way. Basically it means looking at the traffic coming to your website, assessing how they are navigating through it & where you are loosing clients. Also assessing which ads bring in the best sales figures, i.e. which of you ad are converting clicks into sales.

    The real power behind Google Adwords does take some time to implement, if you are serious about it then we recommend no less than 3 months to see real long lasting improvement.
