The thing about social media marketing is that it is not a "one size fits all". Each business is unique, it has its own flavour and voice in its "community". Each business sits within a community, whether you like it or not. The rules for engaging with our community have changed radically since the inception of the web. Within a South African context, people are still as wide eyed as a rabbit caught in the head lights of an eighteen wheeler !!
Please have no illusions that social media marketing isn't hard work, it is. However, the dividends from a successful ongoing social campaign can be hugely powerful. You can be perceived as a company who knows what they are talking about, a company that listens and a company that cares.
A social media marketing strategy needs to be ongoing, it needs to be authentic. It needs to be as real to you as an individual or company is. It needs to communicate your passion in the medium that best suits you. Do not try & copy what someone else is doing. Whether it is a Facebook page, Tweets or a vlog (video blog), it needs to be real, otherwise people will see through it.
Please, please... it is not about spamming the social media channels with "BUY NOW, BUY NOW, BUY NOW". Thoughtful & intentional content is KING. If you produce good content, you cannot help but succeed in the social media channels.

The key to social media marketing is being real. People will soon see through something if it is not real. You might ask, "How can I be real on a 'computer' platform ?". Good question, you need to ask yourself, or your company, "How do we translate what we are about, what our passions are and what business are we in?", or, "What do we want to achieve through this business?", or, "What do we want to communicate to our 'community'...?".
For each person or company, the answers to these questions will be different. Finding an authentic voice in the "noise" of social media is what will set you apart. PS. This is not going to happen over night, it is about a long term commitment to social media channels & finding the right channel.

Just in case you have been hiding under a rock since 2004... Facebook is a social platform that allows you to add friends & send them messages, & update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves, post images, videos, comments, etc.
So how can this be used as a business platform, you might be asking ?
Well, here we have a platform that people have openly adopted on a global scale, in which they are conversing with each other on a daily basis. Millions of eyeballs a day... you fill in the blanks. When large corporate companies start looking to only have a Facebook "Page" as their default web presence, you need to sit up and take notice.

Well, just in case you have been hiding under a rock since 2006... Twitter is a social networking & microblogging service that enables its users to send & read messages known as "tweets". Tweets (140 characters text-based posts), are displayed on the author's profile page & delivered to the author's subscribers base. You can subscribe to an "author" by what is called "following".
"So how can this be used as a business platform, I thought this was a toy used only by pimple faced teens ?"
According to comScore, only 11 percent of Twitter's users are aged 12 to 17.
Short sharp communication, links to important info, users being able to "propell" their message through the "social chain", i.e. sending the info to their friends. So you not only have the reach of your "follower" base but that of others too.

A blog is a type of website, a "web blog" that includes regular entries, ranging from commentary, descriptions of events, to even video blogging (vlogs) of topics.
Blogs can become a powerful tool when it comes to search results. For some clients, who are interested in increasing their rankings, building a blog into their site is a great tactic.....fresh, regular content = better search engine rankings. The key is regular, informative content & not old outdated rubbish.
