The most common question we get is, " How can I get to the top of Google ? "
Search Engine Optimisation is about getting the search engines to "LOVE" your website.
FACT: You can have the BEST looking website in the world & it won't mean a thing to Google! Often the most important things about SEO on your website, are the things you can't even see.
Most of the clients we come across, underestimate the complexities behind proper SEO. The thing about SEO, is that it is not just one aspect, but rather a culmination of a myriad of individual items, which collectively help your website climb the search engine ladder.
What we want to do, is to give you some insight into what true SEO is about, as well as to make sure that the company you choose to perform your SEO, knows what they are doing.
Let's break SEO down into its most rudimentary form. Imagine a visitor to your website is blind, they can't see a thing. In some ways, this is what the spiders that crawl your website are like. They are blind and they can't see a thing. They do not care that it has a nice pink background with a picture of your kitty cat tiled across it. A website's look & feel MEANS NOTHING to spiders.
So how do you "show" a blind person what your website is about ? You have to describe it to them. You start to describe what is on the homepage, you tell them what the company is called, what the company does, and what the pictures on your homepage are about.
Well, here is the kicker, you won't believe how many websites out there tell the Search Engines NOTHING, or very little, about what their business does!
QUICK TEST: Open up your website... on your browser you will see a title bar {probably above the address bar}, that displays the <title> tag of your website. SEO 101 : make sure your title tells search engines & people what your website / company is about.
I'll bet yours says something like "Welcome to ABC Company" - This kind of a title does you absolutely no favours, it only tells people what your name is. What does ABC Company do ? A more appropriate title would be, "web design company based in JHB that focuses on unique website design" - Now that tells both the search engines & visitors about your website.
You might be wondering, "Where do I see this title tag in action?". Well, the next time you perform a search on Google, have a look at the main heading for each search result. This will in most cases display what the <title> tag says for each different website.
The next question is, why was this not done in the beginning if it is so important ? Good question, that is exactly our point, people only view the outward appearance of their website as important. Please don't get us wrong, design is important, but like we have said before, it is only the start. There are many "on-site" updates that can be done to your website to improve its SEO score & searchabililty. You will be surprised at how getting the basics right can dramatically improve your SEO.
Let's pick up on something we mentioned earlier about describing the images on your homepage. You also need to describe these images to the "spiders" that crawl your website, as you would describe them to a blind person. Why? Because it is all about painting a picture for your company on the web. Describing the images on your website might seem pointless, but trust us when we say that it is very important. Remember that it isn't just one aspect that helps SEO, it is the collective result of many SEO improvements.
Another thing, the CONTENT on your website plays a massive role.
People often just slap content onto their website with very little regards as to what it actually says about their company. The way you use your content on your website can be of MASSIVE benefit, not only to your visitors but also to the search engines. Google LOVES GOOD UNIQUE CONTENT.
FYI: Google is in the business of giving their "customers" the most relevant content for their searches - MAKE SURE YOUR CONTENT IS RELEVANT & full of keywords which relate to your industry. When you venture out into the World Wide Web, make sure you have a complete website strategy that includes SEO.
"Let me tell you why we absolutely LOVE our website.
While we are sleeping, it is working. On the weekends, it is working. During the day it is working for us. It is telling thousands of people every month what we can do for them, thousands of people we don't even know.
On top of that, our website has reached companies & individuals in Canada, America, UK, Poland, Denmark, UAE, & numerous African countries. It has helped create international contacts without a single one of our sales people stepping foot into those countries. Consider the man power needed to reach those thousands of people if we did not have a website?
For the last 7 years, our website has literally brought in 1000's of clients that we did not have to cold call. They found us on the web, they came knocking on our door, they called us!
If you are serious about your website, please do not see SEO as a "nice to have", but rather as an absolute necessity!"
